Water Systems
Where does your water come from?
- If you don’t pay a monthly water bill, chances are you have a private water system.
Individual household water wells are the preferred source of safe drinking water for more than 15 million Americans. As a well owner, you can have peace of mind, knowing where your water comes from and you have more control of your drinking water system costs, and your water quality.
You decide when to have your water tested or your system serviced.
You determine who will perform periodic testing and maintenance, and what treatments or equipment will be used to improve your water.
With a little care and maintenance, your water system should provide you and your family with clean and safe drinking water for many years.
Not all private water systems are the same. Some require more frequent testing and types of maintenance.
Do you get your water out of a spring, hand-dug well, bored well, or open reservoir?
- If so your water could be exposed to harmful or potentially fatal bacteria. Please don’t leave it open to chance. Harmful bacteria or poor-quality water could have lasting effects on the health of you and family.
Have your water system tested for bacteria every 3 to 4 months.
If you have a properly constructed, drilled well your water comes from deep in the bedrock and is naturally filtered and bacteria free. This type of system is one of the safest, most reliable drinking water sources available.
The National Groundwater Association recommends that you have your water system inspected and tested for bacteria at least once per year.
